Welcome to Our Place Early Learning Centre

Welcome to Our Place – Early Learning Centre. We welcome you and your family to what we trust will be an extension to your home. We look forward to developing a genuine partnership with you and together we can develop a quality environment that will foster rich care for children and learning experiences for.

The team at Our Place view children as creative and competent learners who bring to our community their unique ideas, talents, passions and personalities. Each and every day we are reminded of the magic and use of imagination in childhood and strive to let this remain as untouched by adult intervention as possible freeing the children to freely play and develop their own rhythms without being interrupted. Our role as teachers is to capture and document these precious moments and develop ways to inspire the children to think more deeply about the concepts they are exploring. As teachers we will become co-learners as we explore the world with the children acting as a resource, a researcher and a companion freeing the child to guide the learning experiences. We are committed to ongoing professional development and are dedicated to lifelong learning. Respect forms the foundation of all our relationships and children are encouraged to care for the environment, the people in it and other peoples creations and perspectives. The principles of Te Whariki the early childhood curriculum document are inherent in the practice and presentation of our curriculum. We believe that an environment which upholds the principles of Tiriti o Waitangi is affirming for children growing up in New Zealand and encourages them to develop a positive sense of self.

Families are warmly welcomes and their contributions, ideas and expertise are valued at Our Place. We strive towards teaching excellence where children and their families feel a true sense of belonging, ownership and feel they have a voice in the day to day running of our centre.

“Not one of us is as good as all of us!”

Parent Involvement

Parent participation sends strong positive messages to your child that you support them and are an integral part of their childcare environment. We offer an open door policy that welcomes you into the centre at anytime. We sincerely want you and your family to feel a sense of belonging at Our Place and ask that your get involved with our projects, excursions, information evenings and family events. We encourage you to share your expertise and talents with us to add depth to our curriculum and ensure you have fun learning with your child during these precious years.

Our Curriculum

Te Whariki, the national early childhood curriculum guides our practive and underpins our philosophy. However we also accommodate the ideas of many international models of early education. Our centre creates a negotiated curriculum where the teacher and learner co-lead the experience drawing on the fresh perspectives and early theories of the child and of the wisdom and research skills of the teacher. Children are given a great deal of scope in guiding their own learning and the teacher will support and encourage their development of ideas. There is simply no limit to how far we will take an idea, it is all dependable on the extent of the involvement of the children. When reflecting on our teaching and learning we like to analyse our practice through the principles that underpin the Reggio Emilia approach. This approach offers a collection of beliefs about early education and helps to guide us to think more deeply and critically about our curriculum and our relationships.

Settling Children

We ask that all children visit the centre prior to attending at least once. During this time a staff member will discuss with you your childs routine, special comforts and areas of interest. It is important to us that you feel safe leaving your child in our care and we welcome you to visit during the day should you wish. Every childs separation process is unique and we will work with you to devise a plan that suits you and your child. We prefer to observe the children progress and let them lead the process.

At Our Place we are committed to providing children with nutritious meals to optimise their capacity to concentrate and learn. All food provided by the centre is approved by the heart foundation, colour and MSG free. Meals include breakfast (before 8.30) nutritious snacks and hot lunches. Once a month the Orca room will have a lunch box day to support the children in their transition to school. Please let us know if your child has any allergies or food intolerances so we can cater for their unique diet. If your child requires a bottle, you will need to send either breast milk or formula along each day with them. We welcome mothers who are breast feeding to pop in whenever possible and will work with you to maintain your breast feeding options.

Opening Hours

We are open from 7.30 till 5.30 and we charge a standard rate of $43 per child for a full day. If you wish for your child to attend a half day they can choose between the morning session from 7.30 to 12.30 or 12.30 to 5.30. The availability of this option may depend on another child enrolling for the remainder of the day.

We do offer 20 hours ECE and would love to discuss with you how this works at Our Place.

Childcare Subsidy

Work and Income New Zealand offers a subsidy for parents whose children attend early childhood education centres. The subsidy is income tested. We have all the documents you require to apply on site. Full payment of fees is the caregivers responsibility until the subsidy has been approved.

We strongly recommend that you send your child to Our Place in play clothes as play here is often wet and messy and we cannot guarantee your childs clothing will be returned unsoiled. All clothing, shoes, bags and cuddlies must be clearly named. Lost property will be donated to charity every two weeks. Please pack at least two changes of clothes each day. During the summer months a sun hat is required and in the winter gumboots and a raincoat. We believe there is no such thing as bad weather, there is just bad clothing for the weather.

Students, Visitors and Volunteers

Our Place is committed to supporting teachers in training which means form time to time we will have students or volunteers from the community working in our centre to help care for children. At no time will a visitor to the centre be left alone with the children and all care is given to helping children make the adjustment to having a new face in their environment.

Our Place – Early Learning Centre promises to provide care for children with and individualised, natural and holistic early education. We believe that a clean green and country based lifestyle gives children a great healthy start in life. We have a highly skilled and professional team that will honour your child and encourage them to reach their full potential.
